Adriaen van der Werff (1659–1722) was a Dutch painter celebrated for his highly refined and meticulously finished paintings. He worked across portraiture, religious subjects and scenes drawn from classical mythology, developing a style characterised by smooth surfaces, delicate detail and idealised figures. From 1697, he served as court painter to the Elector Palatine in Düsseldorf and was knighted in 1703. His work was highly valued during his lifetime and was collected by prominent European patrons.
