Edmund Garvey (1740–1813) was an Irish landscape painter who made a significant contribution to 18th-century British and Irish art. Born in Kilkenny, he trained in Ireland before studying in Rome, where the classical landscape tradition strongly shaped his style.
After moving to London in 1764, Garvey became an active exhibitor at the Royal Academy, later becoming a Royal Academician in 1783. Over his career he exhibited more than 100 works, establishing a reputation for balanced compositions that combined natural observation with classical idealism.
His paintings range from British and Irish landscapes to dramatic continental scenes, often exploring atmospheric effects and the sublime. Garvey’s work reflects the growing 18th-century interest in the picturesque, and remains an important record of the period’s landscape traditions.
