Dame Laura Knight was commissioned by Lord Waldorf Astor to paint two of his winning race horses. Knight painted three oil paintings depicting 'Mannamead, 'The goat always with the horses' and 'Lord Astor's "Pay Up" exercise'. This work depicts a study of his 'Lord Astor's "Pay Up" exercise'.

Pay Up was a stylish brown thoroughbred racehorse; he began his racing career in 1935 and became a very successful racing horse. The following year as a three year old colt he won the Free Handicap, and recorded his biggest success in the 2000 Guineas.
