Tom Coates (1941–2023) was a distinguished British figurative artist renowned for his work in oil, watercolour, and pastel. Born in Birmingham, he commenced his artistic education at Bournville College of Art, progressing to Birmingham College of Art, and later attended the Royal Academy Schools from 1961 to 1964 under the mentorship of Sir Henry Rushbury and Peter Greenham. Throughout his career, Coates garnered numerous accolades, including the De Lazlo Medal from the Royal Society of British Artists in 1984 and the Ondaatje Gold Medal from the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 2007. He held prestigious positions such as President of the New English Art Club, the Royal Society of British Artists, and the Pastel Society. Coates received several notable commissions, including painting the ceremonial procession for the Queen Mother's 90th birthday in 1990 and serving as the official artist for the England cricket team's tour of South Africa in 2000. His works are featured in numerous public and private collections worldwide. Tom Coates passed away on July 20, 2023, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by peers and art enthusiasts alike.
