Philips van Kouwenbergh (1671-1729)
95 x 116.5 cm
Philips van Kouwenbergh (1671–1729) was a Dutch marine painter known for atmospheric depictions of ships, harbours, and coastal waters. Working in Amsterdam during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, he continued the Dutch Golden Age tradition of maritime painting into a later period.
Influenced by artists such as Willem van de Velde the Younger and Ludolf Bakhuizen, he specialised in carefully observed seascapes that emphasise balanced compositions, subtle light, and the everyday rhythms of seafaring life rather than dramatic naval conflict. His work reflects the enduring popularity and refinement of Dutch marine painting, and remains valued for its calm realism and technical precision.
