Johann c. van der Hagen (1676-c.1745)
97.8 x 129.5 cm
Johann C. van der Hagen (1676–c.1745) was a Dutch-born marine and landscape painter active in London and later Dublin during the early eighteenth century. Trained in the celebrated Dutch tradition of maritime painting, he became known for atmospheric depictions of ships, storms, and coastal scenes, combining precise draughtsmanship with dramatic effects of light and weather.
After moving to London, van der Hagen worked within the Anglo-Dutch marine tradition established by artists such as Willem van de Velde the Younger. By the 1720s he had settled in Ireland, where he gained recognition for his lively sea-pieces and landscapes, working particularly in Dublin and the south of the country.
His surviving works reflect the enduring influence of Dutch marine painting beyond the Golden Age and helped shape maritime art in Britain and Ireland during the Georgian period.
